The municipality
of Rigaud, was born in 1995 from the regrouping of the town of Rigaud
and Sainte-Madeleine-de-Rigaud parish which extends to the foot
of the mountain from the same name, at the edge of the lake of Two-Mountains
and the river of Outaouais. A little more than 6000 permanent residents
enjoy a quality of life very common there.
Thanks to its natural treasures, Rigaud recognized a recreotouristic
vocation. By visiting Rigaud, you will discover landscapes and activities
diversified, with the four season old wire. Of is in west or of
north in the south, one finds economic activities and social based
on the natural environment. The urban heart niche with the foot
of the mountain. Patrimonial buildings and a very dynamic commercial

History
It is on October 29
1732 which the marquis de Beauharnois, governor of New-France, and
the Intendant Gilles Hocquart, lord of Champerny, conceded with
Pierre de Rigaud of Cavagnal, major of the companies of the troops
of the marine, and with the captain Pierre-François de Rigaud
of Vaudreuil, his/her brother, "the ground estendue three miles
of face on three miles of depth, along the river called the Large-River,
by drawing towards Length-Sault the aforementioned seigniory under
the name of Rigaud". This concession was ratified by the king
on April 7, 1733.
The third son of the marquis de Vaudreuil, Pierre-François,
lord of part of Rigaud, born in 1698, was the last French general
governor of Canada. The capitulation of Montreal, September 8 and
the rendering of Quebec, September 18, 1760, as well as the treaty
of Paris of February 10, 1763, decided the Rigaud brothers of Vaudreuil
to sell their seigniory on March 27 and April 12, 1763 to Michel-Alain
Chartier, marquis de Lotbinière who resold it with his son
Honourable Michel-Eustace-Gaspard Chartier de Lotbinière,
September 14, 1771. It was one of the defenders of the rights of
the French Canadians. He became even Orateur of the Room of assembly
of Lower-Canada.
The first inhabitants of construction of a new home of French language
were established at the 18th century on the territory of the Lord
of the time to which belonged Vaudreuil, Rigaud and Lotbinière.
These three seigniories were divided into concessions. In Vaudreuil,
one could count that of Coast St-Charles, Pointe Cavagnol and Côte
St-Louis where Solomon Grout was the first to be settled there in
1812. The first inhabitants cultivated the grounds and gave to the
Lord the fruit of their harvests including oats, rye, buckwheat,
corn, potatos, pea, broad beans, tomatos and hay, it as a payment
for the renting of their grounds. The majority of the immigrant
first of the English language settled in the construction of their
new homes after the war of 1812. Most came from New England, England
and more particularly from Cumberland, and Scotland.
It is
about people proud and full with history, with still several root-family's
who which welcomes the construction of a new home in Rigaud.
