St-Lazare
FRANCAIS
History
It is on October 29
1732 which the marquis de Beauharnois, governor of New-France,
and the Intendant Gilles Hocquart, lord of Champerny, conceded
with Pierre de Rigaud of Cavagnal, major of the companies of the
troops of the marine, and with the captain Pierre-François
de Rigaud of Vaudreuil, his/her brother, "the ground estendue
three miles of face on three miles of depth, along the river called
the Large-River, by drawing towards Length-Sault the before mentioned
seigneurie under the name of Rigaud". This concession was
ratified by the king on April 7, 1733.
The third son of the marquis de Vaudreuil, Pierre-François,
lord of part of Rigaud, born in 1698, was the last French general
governor of Canada. The capitulation of Montreal, September 8
and the rendering of Quebec, September 18, 1760, as well as the
treaty of Paris of February 10, 1763, decided the Rigaud brothers
of Vaudreuil to sell their seigniory on March 27 and April 12,
1763 to Michel-Alain Chartier, marquis de Lotbinière who
resold it with his son Honourable Michel-Eustace-Gaspard Chartier
de Lotbinière, September 14, 1771. It was one of the defenders
of the rights of the French Canadians. He became even Orateur
of the Room of assembly of Lower Canada.
First
inhabitants tht had the construction of a new home;
The first inhabitants of the construction of a new home of French
language were established at the 18th century on the territory
of the Lord of the time to which belonged Vaudreuil, Rigaud and
Lotbinière. These three seigniories were divided into concessions.
In Vaudreuil, one could include that Côte St-Charles, Pointe
Cavagnol, Côte St-Louis or Solomon Grout as of the first
settlers in 1812. The first inhabitants cultivated the grounds
and gave to the Lord the fruit of their harvest including oats,
rye, buckwheat, corn, potatos, pea, broad beans, tomatos and hay,
it as a payment for the hiring of the grounds. The majority of
the immigrant first of the English language settled in the construction
of their new home after the war of 1812. Those came from New England,
England and more particularly from Cumberland, and Scotland.
It is in 1875, that
the residents of the parish, called today St-Lazare, express their
desire to form a distinct entity. December 29, 1875, an act confers
the statute of municipality on the territory of St-Lazare who,
in 1876, takes the name of Municipal Corporation of the Parish
of St-Lazare. The seigneuriale was also abolished.
To
fill the local requirements in the construction of a new home;
According to brought back facts' from generation to generation,
other businessmen would have been allured by the idea to exploit
the iron ore along the Sainte-Angélique row. This first
production and extraction of the natural richnesses will encourage
other tradesmen to come to settle in periphery: three sawmills
to treat and cut the trees to fill local requirements for the
construction new houses, they used horses to draw the coaches
transporting the mineral extracts and to dispatch them towards
the forging mills of the time, of which that of St-Maurice. Agriculture
with the mines, with the mills, St-Lazare sees being born his
first trade. The residents of St-Lazare name themselves Lazarois
and Lazaroises, not to confuse with Lazariens or Lazarienne of
St-Lazare-of-Bellechasse.
It is about people
proud and full with history, with several family-roots which still
live here and welcomes the construction of your new home.
